Jornadas 163

Many histories of Ancient Greece center their stories on Athens, but what would that history look like if they didn't? There is another way to tell this story, one that situates Greek history in terms of the relationships between smaller Greek cities and in contact with the wider Mediterranean. In this book, author Joshua P. Nudell offers a new history of the period from the Persian wars to wars that followed the death of Alexander the Great, from the perspective of Ionia. While recent scholarship has increasingly treated Greece through the lenses of regional, polis, and local interaction, there has not yet been a dedicated study of Classical Ionia. This book fills this clear gap in the literature while offering Ionia as a prism through which to better understand Classical Greece. This book offers a clear and accessible narrative of the period between the Persian Wars and the wars of the early Hellenistic period, two nominal liberations of the region. The volume complements existing histories of Classical Greece. Close inspection reveals that the Ionians were active partners in the imperial endeavor, even as imperial competition constrained local decision-making and exacerbated local and regional tensions. At the same time, the book offers interventions on critical issues related to Ionia such as the Athenian conquest of Samos, rhetoric about the freedom of the Greeks, the relationship between Ionian temple construction and economic activity, the status of the Panionion, Ionian poleis and their relationship with local communities beyond the circle of the dodecapolis, and the importance of historical memory to our understanding of ancient Greece. The result is a picture of an Aegean world that is more complex and less beholden narratives that give primacy to the imperial actors at the expense of local developments.

Revolutionary Worlds looks at the Indonesian revolution (1945-1949) from a local and regional perspective. In several contributions, Indonesian and Dutch researchers bring to life the revolutionary world from widely differing perspectives. The authors explain how Indonesian, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian civilians, fighters, farmers and officials experienced and shaped the chaotic period between 1945 and 1950. The book focuses on survival strategies, mobilization, and the use of force against the backdrop of the Indonesian and Dutch authorities’ efforts to gain or maintain control. Uniting two national historiographical traditions which have long remained largely separate, Revolutionary Worlds is the result of a special collaboration between the Indonesian research project Proklamasi, Kemerdekaan, Revolusi dan Perang di Indonesia ('Proclamation, Independence, Revolution and War in Indonesia', Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta) and the Dutch research group of the Regional Studies project, under the umbrella of the research programme Independence, Decolonization, Violence and War in Indonesia, 1945-1950.

The general purpose of military paperwork in the Roman army was to control and to manage the personnel, giving detailed information about compositions of the unit, status and availability of the soldiers for duty tasks, their salaries and expenses. The needs of the service called for documents highly readable that, in their form and content, show a good degree of uniformity over time and space. Although some scholars have discussed the various typologies of documents and have reconstructed the branches of military bureaucracy, until now the topic is still a field open for study. The volume by Ornella Salati aims to address the question of documents’ composition in the Roman army during the first three centuries AD, analysing Latin papyri from Egypt. Particular attention is paid firstly to their layout, visual details (format of columns, blank spaces) and handwriting (capital and/or cursive); secondly their pattern, content and language (specific sentences, formulae) are discussed. Comparative evidence from other military contexts (Vindolanda in northern England, Dura Europos in southern-eastern Syria, Gholaia in north Africa) are also taken into account. Possible connections with time and space, and even with the material support are explored in order to show similarities and differences. Such comprehensive approach consents to obtain a deeper knowledge of the organization of the Roman army and of the system of writing, authentication and archiving its documents.
